“With great power comes great responsibility.” Although there is a selection of similar quotes, the Spider Man fans amongst you will probably instantly recognise these words as Uncle Ben’s famous line. While we are not swinging between high rise buildings in Manhattan, shooting webs out of our forearms, and fighting villains made from sand, this quote still applies to our line of work. All of our staff are DBS checked to make sure we only use our vast knowledge of locks for the power of good. 

What Is a DBS Check?

DBS or Disclosure and Barring Service is the government organisation that employers can use to check the criminal record of prospective employees. It is vital in industries such as healthcare or education to make sure those applying for the job are suitable to be around vulnerable individuals. Formerly known as CRB (Criminal Records bureau) checks, the DBS check can be carried out in three different ways:

• A standard check will show spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings. 
  
• An enhanced check shows the same as a standard check plus any information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.
  
• An enhanced check with barred lists shows the same as an enhanced check plus whether the applicant is on the list of people barred from doing the role. 
  

Why Is This Important for Us?

While our work doesn’t often see us working directly around children, we frequently assist elderly and potentially vulnerable customers. For this reason, it is important that all of our employees are DBS checked before they can begin working for us. We work in a variety of different locations, which can sometimes include care homes and schools – making DBS checks vital.

Before hiring anybody, we carry out DBS checks to see if they have any criminal history. Given the nature of our work, DBS checks are vital for both us and our customers. We would never hire someone who could potentially be a threat to our customers and we can assure you that none of our employees have criminal records. We deal with sensitive data and have tools and knowledge that, in the wrong hands, could be used to cause harm or commit crime.
