Five Signs a Locksmith May Be Recommending Unnecessary Work

You’re under pressure and simply want to have the problem resolved as quickly as possible.

The majority of locksmiths provide honest, professional and value-for-money services, though some will always recommend destructive entry or expensive replacement parts before even properly assessing the fault. Knowing the warning signs can help you to avoid unnecessary work or an unexpectedly high bill.

1. Drilling Is Suggested Immediately

As we’ve stated in previous blogs, we’re not saying that there is no place for drilling a lock. Sometimes it is genuinely the only way of gaining entry. It should not be the first option for a straightforward home lockout, for example.

Any experienced and reputable locksmith will take the time to assess the door and attempt non-destructive entry before reaching for their drill. If your locksmith recommends drilling immediately, ask them what other methods have been considered.

2. You Are Told the Entire Locking System Needs Replacing

If you struggle to lock your door, it doesn’t necessarily mean it needs a new mechanism. It could be something as simple as poor alignment, worn hinges, a damaged gearbox or a single replaceable component.

For a locksmith, replacing the entire system can be the quickest option. For you, it may also be considerably more expensive.

A professional should be able to identify the cause of the fault before recommending a replacement and explain whether a repair or adjustment could provide a reliable solution.

3. The Locksmith Cannot Clearly Explain the Problem

You should not need to be an expert or have specialist knowledge to understand why a course of action has been recommended.

Any reputable locksmith will be able to show you what has failed and clearly explain what work needs to be carried out to rectify the problem, including why a particular part may need replacing.

If your locksmith is vague in their explanation or trying to bamboozle you with technical jargon, be cautious. Phrases such as “the whole thing has gone” are not especially helpful without further detail.

4. The Agreed Price Keeps Increasing

However, on rare occasions, further problems will come to light that could only have been identified once work was underway. In those instances, we will always stop and explain what we have found and any additional costs this will incur. Only once you are happy to proceed will we recommence work.

If you’ve received a low initial quote, only to discover surprise extra labour charges or expensive replacement parts without clear justification, this can be a warning sign.

Ask for a full quotation that includes call-out fees, labour and any parts required. You should fully understand all cost implications before agreeing to any work.

5. Only the Most Expensive Replacement is Offered

Top-of-the-range, high-security locks undoubtedly provide worthwhile protection, but that’s not to say that the most expensive option is always the right choice for every project.

A reputable locksmith should be able to explain all of the available choices and recommend a lock that complements your specific door, security requirements and budget. At no point should you feel pressured to purchase an upgraded option that you do not understand or need.
