Help! I Locked Myself Out of My House!

01/02/2018 One of our company vans.

First of all, don’t panic. If you suspect that you are locked out of your house, panicking won’t help. Make sure that you are certain that the situation is as it seems. Check your pockets/handbag/any other likely place thoroughly. Once you are certain that you are locked out – call PT Lock & Safe. If your keys are locked inside, our skilled locksmiths will help you regain access to the house without damaging the locks so that you can continue to use the same key.

What Not to Do

Here are five courses of action that you should definitely not take when locked out of your home:

  • Send a small child up a ladder to an open bathroom window. It shouldn’t need to be said, but please don’t risk the health and safety of your children to regain access to your house.
  • Attempt to pick the lock with a hairclip. There are a variety of specialist tools that we locksmiths use to pick a lock – a hairclip is not amongst them. Most likely outcome, you will break the hairclip off in the lock.
  • Attempt to prise open the lock with a credit card. It’s true that certain types of spring live latchbolts can be opened by using a flexible friend. Locksmiths use this technique occasionally. However, we don’t use a credit card. We use a plastic card that is much longer and much more flexible.
  • Smash a Window. If you have a moment, google local glazier prices to see why this is a terrible idea.
  • Kick the Door Open. Some people have always secretly wanted to kick a door down. For them, being locked out of their home is an opportunity to fulfil a dream. That said, modern doors are pretty hard to kick open. You’re better off avoiding injury and calling a locksmith.
