What to Do If Your Key Snaps in the Lock

04/07/2018 A broken front door key that snapped in a doors lock.

A minor issue that is a major inconvenience, a snapped key can derail your whole morning and leave you late for the school and work run. This is an annoying and possibly scary situation to find yourself in, but it is much more common than you might expect. Due to the use they get and the wear and tear they experience on a daily basis, it’s not surprising that keys can snap.

What Should You Do After Your Key Snaps?

If your key does snap, it’s important you act quickly. If the half of the key that’s in the lock is poking out, you might be able to pry it out yourself using either your fingers or pliers. However, if the key is well and truly stuck in the lock, let professionals with the right experience deal with this issue.

You should act quickly if your key does snap as the snapped part of the key can cause more damage to the lock. If the key broke off inside the lock before the door was shut, you’ll be unable to lock the door, leaving your home at greater risk from burglary. Conversely, if the key broke in the lock after the door has closed, you may not be able to open the door until the issue has been resolved.
