How to Keep Your Safe... Safe

safes within a safe room

Your safe is a valuable investment, and buying one is the first step in keeping your valuables secure. Once you own a safe, there are steps you can take to keep your safe… er…safe.

Choose a secure location

Choose a secure location to position your safe. A visible safe is like an advertisement to burglars that there are valuables on the property. The safe should be positioned in a place that is difficult for burglars to access. For instance, if it’s in your office away from publicly accessible parts of your business, consider putting a lock on your office door.

Keep your safe contents confidential

Don't tell anyone where you keep your safe or what you keep in it.

Use a strong combination or key

If you have a combination safe, make sure the combination you choose is a strong one.  Avoid using obvious numbers, such as your birthday or address. If possible, avoid writing the number down, memorise it instead.

If you have a key operated safe, keep the key in a safe place, such as a key-safe box with a secure combination as above.

Use a security system

A security system that sets off an alarm when triggered can help to deter burglars and make it more difficult for them to break into your safe. If you have a security system, make sure it is working properly and that you test it regularly.

Be aware of the risks

Even if you take all of the precautions listed above, there is still a risk that your safe could be broken into. It's important to be aware of the risks and to take steps to mitigate them. You are more likely to be robbed by a member of staff than targeted by a burglar - so limit those to whom you grant safe access to just your most trusted team members.
